Hearing Loss

Cochlear Implant

There’s never been a better time to experience the joy of better hearing.

A conversation at dinner with friends. A meeting with co-workers in a busy office. You want to experience all of the moments that others enjoy with the same independence and the same self-confidence. We understand that struggling to hear and communicate, even while wearing hearing aids, can be stressful. You want to be able to enjoy life without planning around your hearing loss. Cochlear implants may be the solution you are looking for to bring you the joy of better hearing.

At Rehder Balance & Hearing Clinic we are able to evaluate new and established patients for possible Cochlear implants as well as mapping patients with Cochlear America implants.

When hearing aids are not enough

Cochlear implants work differently than hearing aids. Hearing aids help many people by making the sounds they hear louder. Unfortunately, as hearing loss progresses, sounds need to not only be made louder, they need to be made clearer. Cochlear implants can help give you that clarity, especially in noisy environments.
A Cochlear Implant with Hybrid Hearing can provide you access to the sounds you’re missing so you can enjoy conversations with friends and family, talk on the phone and hear the sounds of nature. The journey to better hearing is an exciting one, and the decisions you make will be life-changing. We’ll be with you every step of the way, supporting and cheering you on.

Cochlear implants

Cochlear implants are surgically implanted medical devices that replace the function of the damaged inner ear (cochlea) and are designed to mimic natural hearing. There are two main components to a cochlear implant system:

The external sound processor. Choices include:

  • Kanso™ Sound Processor (off-the-ear solution)
  • Nucleus® 6 Sound Processor (behind-the-ear solution)

The internal implant that features options of electrode arrays to fit your hearing needs bypassing the damaged portion of the inner ear, a cochlear implant stimulates the hearing nerve directly and helps to make sounds both louder and clearer so you can understand speech and the sounds around you.

Cochlear™ Hybrid™ Hearing*

If you are able to hear some low-pitched sounds, but are missing high-pitched sounds and are struggling to understand speech, Cochlear™ Hybrid™ Hearing* may be a solution. Hybrid Hearing amplifies your natural hearing and provides access to the high-pitched sounds you’re missing using our innovative Cochlear Nucleus System technology. It’s the first FDA-approved hearing solution of its kind.

Will you benefit from a cochlear implant?

Cochlear implants have improved the lives of hundreds of thousands of people across the world by providing access to sound. Typically, within a short amount of time after receiving your implant, you can expect to achieve better speech understanding.
Research studies have shown that adults receiving cochlear implants understand sentences on average almost seven times better than they could with hearing aids. Then other improvements may follow, such as talking on the phone and enjoying music.
Many factors contribute to hearing performance with a cochlear implant. Research and decades of experience have demonstrated that cochlear implants provide:

  • Improved auditory awareness of sounds at levels within the normal range of hearing
  • Improved speech and language skills
  • Improved quality of life
  • Improved employment opportunities
